The Big 12 tournament will proceed without Kansas coach Bill Self, as the school reported on Thursday that he underwent "a routine medical procedure" at the emergency room on Wednesday evening.

Although the nature of Self's health issue was not disclosed in the statement, the school dismissed earlier rumors of a heart attack.

Kansas Coach Bill Self Has Health Problems

In a statement released by the University of Kansas Health System, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Steve Stites clarified that KU Men's Basketball Coach Bill Self was admitted to their facility as a patient. Dr. Stites further confirmed that contrary to some media reports, Coach Self did not experience a heart attack. He was admitted to the emergency department on Wednesday night and underwent a standard procedure, which was successful. The statement also mentioned that Coach Self is expected to fully recover, but no additional medical information will be released at this time.

It remains uncertain whether Coach Self will be able to lead Kansas in the upcoming NCAA tournament, but he did release a brief statement on Thursday expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support and looking forward to rejoining his team soon.

During the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament on Thursday, assistant coach Norm Roberts filled in as the interim coach for Kansas in their victory over West Virginia. Roberts revealed that the team only learned about Self's situation on Thursday morning, but that the coach is doing well and even expressed interest in watching game film.

Kansas Coach Bill Self Will Be Back Soon

Kansas players showed resilience in their win, channeling the "next man up" mentality that Self often preaches to them. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the players drew parallels to the start of the season when Self was serving a suspension.

Self, who has won 17 Big 12 titles since taking over as coach in 2003, has had to coach without his presence on the sideline earlier this season due to a four-game suspension related to an NCAA infractions case. However, the team emerged victorious even in his absence.

On Wednesday, Coach Self was present for a team shootaround and appeared to be in good health. He even spoke to reporters about the team's readiness for the upcoming tournament.
